The Father of the Fatherless

Click here for audio version of this message

The word of God in Psalm 68:5 says, A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation. 6 God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

In other words God cares for the orphan, the foster child, the emotionally distraught, the helpless, the weak, the anemic, the fragile – those whose father's have deceased and those whose father's are absent in anyway. He even goes as far as to include the fatherless in His plan for a great inheritance.

In actuality we were all without a true father until we came to know the Father of all Fathers. Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

Even if you had or have a wonderful father, know that through a relationship with Jesus you can have access to the Father of all Fathers.

This morning we're talking about the Father of the fatherless.

I just want to take a few minutes with you this morning and share some key points about the relationship our Father God has with those who are fatherless in the natural.

First let's define father and fatherless

Father defined: begetter of offspring, male parent, one who provides, protects and offers paternal care. Instinctively fathers are founders, authors, creators and originators. Fathers are also role models, givers and leaders.

Fatherless defined: Most common terms used is orphans or foster children. Those whose father's have deceased. Those who have absentee fathers. Those who have fathers who are present but are detached emotionally.

1.) Our Father relieves the fatherless -

The Lord watches over the strangers;
He relieves the fatherless and widow. Psalm 146:9

Our Father relieves the mental pain, distress, anxiety and fear that the fatherless go through. Imagine not having a natural father to help ease or alleviate pain, distress, anxiety and fear...

2.) Our father hears the cry of the fatherless -

You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. 23 If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry; Exodus 22:22-23

Look at verse 24 – it says how serious God is about the fatherless

24 and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows and your children fatherless.

Do you think God makes His point clear?

3.) Our father helps the fatherless -

12 Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up Your hand! Do not forget the humble. 13 Why do the wicked renounce God? He has said in his heart, You will not require an account.” 14 But You have seen it, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You: You are the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 10:12-14

4.) Our father administers justice on behalf of the fatherless -

17 Lord you have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear, 18 To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more. Psalm 10:17-18

17 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. 18 He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. Deuteronomy 10:17-18

Question – What does our Father expect of us in our relationship with the fatherless?

Isaiah 1:16 & 17

16 Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.
Cease to do evil.

Doesn't this sound like being holy?

17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Reprove the oppressor;
Defend the fatherless
Plead for the widow.
